Marvel at breathtaking views of site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, Squaw Valley USA. The tram is closed from late September until mid-October.

Fanny Bridge
Junction of California Highway 89 and 28, Tahoe City, California
Almost any day of the year you too will be tempted to feed the giant rainbow trout at Fanny Bridge in the Truckee River. Be sure not to miss the Lake Tahoe dam outlet gates that control the level of the lake. If you have time, you can rent a raft and take a leisurely self-guided five-mile float from Fanny Bridge on the Truckee River.

The Gatekeeper of Lake Tahoe was originally located where the person who was responsible for monitoring the level of the lake lived. Today the Gatekeeper's Cabin is a museum showcasing Lake Tahoe's past through displays, stories and artifacts.

The Ponderosa Ranch at Lake Tahoe was selected as the setting for the NBC television series Bonanza because of its spectacular scenery. Step back in time as you wander around the authentic 12-acre downtown streets or visit the popular Cartwright family home, where many interior scenes for the series were filmed. There is much to do including hay wagon breakfasts, pony rides and antique stores.

Watson Cabin Living Museum

Watson Cabin Living Museum is listed in the National Register of Historic Homes as the oldest building in Tahoe City. Built in 1909, the cabin is now a museum and houses turn of the century antiques.

Emerald Bay and Vikingsholm Castle

Located about 1/2 mile east of Fannette Island in Lake Tahoe, the Emerald Bay is perhaps the most photographed area of Lake Tahoe of due mainly to the contrasting colors of the emerald green water, deep blue skies and sheer granite cliffs. The Vikingsholm Castle, a replica of an 11th-century Viking castle is a one mile hike beginning at Emerald Bay. Constructed of granite and timber found at the lake, the 38-room mansion is one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the western hemisphere.

Hike Emerald Bay
From Vikingsholm Castle you can hike for another 2.5 miles along the shore of the bay to Emerald Point on the main body of the lake and from there another 4.5 miles to D. L. Bliss State Park.
Another popular hike from this area is the 1-mile walk to Eagle Lake. The trail head begins across the road from the Emerald Bay parking lot in the Eagle Falls Picnic Area.

Fallen Leaf Lake

To reach the lake, take California 89 northwest to its junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe (the "Y"). Look for Fallen Leaf Road about 3 miles on the right, turn and follow it to the lake.

Lake Tahoe Basin
Take a drive and marvel at the scenic Lake Tahoe Basin, the second largest natural lake in the Lake Tahoe Basin. If you are in the mood for a hike, visit the popular Fallen Leaf Campground and select from a number of short or long hiking trails.

Hornblower's Tahoe Queen, an authentic paddle wheeler, sails from its pier in South Lake Tahoe across the lake for two or three hour tours into Emerald Bay daily throughout the year.

Lake Tahoe was once a popular summer retreat for wealthy people from San Francisco, Virginia City and Sacramento during the late 1800's. Visitors to the Tallac Historic Site can see several luxurious old private estates.

Summer hours: Through Labor Day weekend: Wednesday - Sunday from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Adjoining the Tallac Historic Site, the area around Taylor Creek Visitor Center is one of the few places outside Alaska where a salmon spawn can be observed so easily. The visitor is treated to experience the area's ecosystem within the park and through aquarium exhibits at the visitor center. In the spring and summer your eyes are treated to the abundant wild flower varieties making their annual appearance in the area.
